GENERAL INFORMATION
-
The concept of exploring the African
continent by safari truck has been a
popular form of travel for many years.
Overland tours are not for everyone,
but they do provide an economical and
safe means of travel across the “Dark
Continent”. They are not luxury tours
but an experience that allows you to
interact with many aspects of the
environment on a personal level.
The number of companies offering various
overland packages has increased in
recent times, with the vehicles becoming
more comfortable and better equipped.
The modern vehicles being used have also
reduced the travelling times between
destinations thereby allowing passengers
more time to enjoy the sights on offer.
-
All safari trucks are self-sufficient
and carry full cooking and camping
equipment, long range fuel tanks,
large water tanks, storage lockers for
baggage, music systems,
interior/exterior lighting, tool kit &
spare parts.
-
-
Passengers are usually accommodated in
2-person tents with mosquito netting
and will be either Dome-type or
A-frame. Passengers are expected to
provide their own sleeping bags and
mats while on tour. Travellers are
expected to participate in the daily
tasks necessary for the smooth running
of the tour – helping with food
preparation, dish washing, truck
loading, etc – and are required to put
up and take down their tents.
-
-
Depending on the type of vehicle being
used, group sizes usually average
around 18 – 25 passengers and comprise
a wide range of nationalities. Tour
members generally range in age from 18
to 35 but most companies are happy to
take older people who consider
themselves to be “young at heart”.
-
-
From Nairobi, a wide variety of tours
are on offer ranging from 4 days to 8
weeks. The tour price varies
depending on the inclusions but is
generally based on an overall cost for
the tour plus a kitty contribution.
The kitty covers such things as daily
meals, camping fees, various
excursions, etc, and is usually paid
locally to the tour leader before the
start of the tour. Visas, personal
insurance and items of a personal
nature are normally not included in
the tour cost.

TURKANA BUS
– A SAFARI WITH A DIFFERENCE
-
One of the most unique safaris in the
world is the legendary perennial
Turkana Bus, which has had over 1,000
scheduled departures to Northern
Kenya.
The 1,000 miles (1,600kms) round-trip
safari, in custom-made open-sided
trucks, is suitable only for intrepid
visitors who wish to experience the
remotest of areas without the amenities
of a Lodge. Accommodation is in basic
camps, with you erecting your own tent
(which is provided) and fetching
firewood! A light-weight sleeping bag
(or blanket) is required. Meals are
simple but a balanced affair –
continental breakfast, cold lunches and
hot dinners prepared on the spot by your
safari cook.
