Located before the entrance to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Buhoma Community Rest Camp gives outdoor enthusiasts a taste of safari-style living and is an excellent base camp for Gorilla trekking as well as observing the many endemic bird species that inhabit the region.
This pleasant and well-kept camp provides guests several lodging options such as bandas, self-contained safari tents, dormitory style accommodations, and leveled terraces for those with camping equipment. The camp also has an open-fronted restaurant where guests can enjoy exceptional views of the magnificent forest canopy while dining on delicious meals prepared by our local chefs using locally grown produce. There is also a fully stocked bar adjoining the restaurant for those individuals who want to relax and unwind.
While Buhoma Community Rest Camp hosts many gorilla trekking enthusiasts, there are a variety of other reasons to remain in Bwindi. Our guided Community Village Walk is an excellent way to meet the locals and learn traditional ways of life; including that of the Batwa people. Guests can also venture into the forest for a guided waterfall hike or choose the bird hike to observe and hear the many colorful birds in the area. One can also partake in a day of mountain biking in the forest for we provide mountain bikes for the riding enthusiast.
Buhoma Community Rest Camp (BCRC) is the backbone of Buhoma Mukono Community Development Association. It has been the main source of funding to the association’s various community projects since its inception in 1993 (alongside BMCDA). It is setup at the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with the main aim of providing quality lodging service to its guests.
There are six (6) well-furnished and self-contained safari tents, two (2) self-contained cottages, and five (5) non-self-contained twin cottage bandas. All of our bandas are built with local materials and are of African architectural design. We also offer guests a dormitory of six (6) beds as well as camp sites throughout the camp that are covered with green grass and surrounded by a thick tropical forest. To further increase our source of funding to various community projects, BMCDA will soon be offering luxury facilities for those guests who are visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and would like their accommodations to be a little less rustic.
Guests staying at Buhoma Community Rest Camp can be assured their mornings will be filled with beautiful views of a mist-covered forest and the amazing sounds of nature. Bwindi’s biologically diverse rainforest, dating back over 25,000 years, contains almost 400 species of plants and protects an estimated 320 mountain gorillas. This biologically diverse region also provides shelter to 120 other mammal species such as baboons, chimpanzees, duikers, elephants, and antelopes. There are also around 350 species of birds inhabiting the forest, including twenty three (23) Albertine Rift endemic species; fourteen (14) of which are recorded nowhere else in Uganda.
