Matemwe Bungalows offers you a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. Enjoy the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean, the fine powder sand of the beach and the wild bush vegetation. Meet the friendly villagers, experience the local fish market and explore the ocean reefs on your doorstep. Here, in harmony with the environment and in co-operation with the local people, Matemwe Bungalows was built to offer you a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. The rural northeast coast of Zanzibar is well known for its fine weather and natural beauty. That's why we call it the Sunny Side of Paradise. After years of loving care the garden of Matemwe Bungalows forms a small oasis in this otherwise dry scrub bush land.
Matemwe Bungalows is situated on the northeast coast of Zanzibar one kilometre north of Matemwe Village. It's a 45-minute drive from Stone Town.
Matemwe Bungalows is an excellent stay at almost any time of the year, as Zanzibar has a tropical climate which is fairly stable - average temperature never drops below 25 degrees. Water temperature is just as nice with an average temperature of 20 degrees. Matemwe Bungalows is closed during the rain season (April-May).
Matemwe Bungalows has 12 beautiful bungalows, built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful garden.
Room Dcor: Built from local materials, each with a personal touch. All the rooms, as well as the restaurant are directly overlooking the Indian Ocean. You can enjoy the comings and goings of the local ngalawa fishing fleet from the comfort of your private veranda or from the restaurant.
Room amenities: The bungalows are made from local materials, each with a personal touch. Each bungalow has a private veranda with hammocks and couches overlooking the Indian Ocean. Inside the room, you'll find a grand, king-size bed, an extra single bed, plenty of space and personal touches. The bathrooms are large and have deep bathtubs and walk-in showers. Although mosquitoes are rare in Matemwe, all rooms are equipped with a large mosquito net
The restaurant is situated in the main thatched lodge area. Such is the pleasant vibe at Matemwe, that guests often move their tables together. If you want a particularly romantic evening, you can dine on the beach (only two couples a night though) while sitting on reed matting and cushions. If you're booked in the Asali honeymoon suite, you'll probably opt to have meals brought to you by the suite's dedicated chef.Swahili recipes are used in combination with fresh, local ingredients, so you'll taste authentic Zanzibar cuisine. The menu changes daily and includes options of fish, chicken or red meat with vegetarian dishes available on request.
Breakfast consists simply of fresh fruit, bread, cakes and fruit juices.
Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavors. Dinner offers a choice of main courses between meat, fish and vegetarian. Our barbeque of meat and fish is particularly popular. The "catch of the day" might actually be yours!
For the early birds the sunrise is a sight to savor. Early morning, tea and/or coffee will be served at your veranda. In the evening, the full moon rising out of the sea is a wonderful romantic experience you're not likely to forget. On moonless nights gaze and get lost in the star-filled sky. Our new open-air bar under the palm trees on the sand is a peaceful retreat.
