Mbuzi Mawe Camp

A place of infinite calm surrounded by untamed majesty, Mbuzi Mawe offers a timeless blend of classical safari rusticity and the world-class professionalism of Serena Safari Lodges, Resorts and Hotels. Unlike any other camp, Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp lies at the epicenter of the Serengeti within easy reach of the prime wildlife theatres of Lobo, the Western Corridor of the Grumeti River, the southern grass plains, the Seronera Valley and the kopjes, or inselbergs, of Barafu, Gol, Maasai, Loliondo, Simba and Moru. Scenically located in a glade guarded by 3 million year old granite towers, Mbuzi Mawe (meaning Klipspringer in Kiswahili) makes maximum use of its unique wilderness location. There are al fresco breakfasts, safari luncheons, lantern-lit bush suppers, campfire roasts, and dance displays by the Ikoma people as well as game drives, ranger-led bush walks, ornithology and sightings of: elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, warthog, hippo and crocodile.

LOCATION : Unlike any other camp, Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp lies at the epicenter of the Serengeti within easy reach of the prime wildlife theatres of Lobo, the Western Corridor of the Grumeti River, the southern grass plains, the Seronera Valley and the kopjes, or inselbergs, of Barafu, Gol, Maasai, Loliondo, Simba and Moru.

Access: 8-10hours drive from Arusha on dry weather; 60mins flight from Arusha Airport to Seronera Airstrip and 45kms (90mins drive) from Seronera Airstrip, The camp is 30 kms (1hr drive) from Lobo Airstrip.

CLIMATE: The Serengeti has a near perfect highland climate; cool mornings and evenings, warm sunny days. The sort of climate that prompted Isaak Denison to say (although she was talking about the Kenyan Highlands) that you spring out of bed in the mornings feeling "here I am - where I ought to be."

The year in Northern Tanzania is divided roughly into three chunks. The dry season runs from June to October, the wet between March and May and in between is a period of so called short rains, during which time things turn green. At this time of year there are localised rain showers around, but it's more or less dry.

The unforgettable "Sundowner"
Sipping a "sundowner" cocktail as the sun sinks below the horizon is central to the safari experience; and a scene that the staff of Mbuzi Mawe delight in setting. Drinks and canaps can be enjoyed on the rocky terraces of the camps own kopjes, out in the wilderness, or around the massive fire-pit where guests may foregather for pre-dinner chat and post-safari tales. The camp also offers evocative al fresco breakfasts, safari luncheons, lantern-lit bush suppers, campfire roasts, and cultural dancing displays by the Ikoma people, the original guardians of the Serengeti plains.

At the heartbeat of the Serengeti
Unlike any other camp, Mbuzi Mawe lies at the epicenter of the Serengeti and within easy reach of the prime wildlife theatres of Lobo, the Western Corridor of the Grumeti River, the southern grass plains, the Seronera Valley and the kopjes, or inselbergs, of Barafu, Gol, Maasai, Loliondo, Simba and Moru.

In the arena of the wild
Time in camp seems fleeting when theres so much to experience. Diversions include game drives, ranger-led bush walks, bird-watching and sightings of such Serengeti residents as elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, warthog, hippo, crocodile and a bewildering array of antelopes and accompanying plains game. As for the birdlife, the Serengeti offers one of the most spellbinding ornithological experiences in the world.

Domain of the Klipspringer, Haunt of the lion
Named after the tiny Klipspringer antelopes (Mbuzi Mawe in Kiswahili) that still prance atop its rocky battlements at dawn, this glade was once the hunting ground of lions that lounged in the shelter of its tumbled boulders to ambush their prey. And when night falls, the camp still echoes to the menace of their far distant calls.
