Shela is a fourty-five minute walk south along the beach. Once around the point beyond the village and Kijani House, the dunes and the beach stretch for seven desert miles. There are intresting ruins at the back of the village, though Shela's most prominent landmark is its Friday Mosque built with a conical shaped minaret in 1829.
is the last house on the sea front before the sand dunes start. A large, cool house.
The sea breezes which are ideal for sailing ensure the island does not get too hot. The annual pattern is: May & June: Some rain most days, intermittent sunshine, cool July & August: Showery, cool and breezy September & October: Mostly dry, warm and sunny November: Generally warm and sunny December - February: Hot and sunny, breezy March & April: Hot and sunny, calm and a little humid.
On the first floor, raised above beach level, there is a stunning, edgeless, fresh water swimming pool. It has a sunbathing ledge, a sheltered bar room and low comfortable baraza seats.
SPECIAL FEATURE: Dhows make regular stops to Shela so it is easy to ride into Lamu or you can walk the shore path and take in the scenery.
Fish, lobster, crab and fresh oysters. Wine and spirits are not included. Excellent international cuisine and Swahili fish.
