Lamu Peponi Hotel

OFFICIAL CATEGORY (Ministry of Tourism classification): 4****

As quoted in Harpers and Queen, œPeponi is simple, fresh, cheerful and everything about it is totally original and genuine no frozen foods here nor frozen smiles. The retreat from hubbub and the fast life. Architecture, views, beach, dining, sounds and smells are all exhilarating surprises, unique to this coast. The hotel commands a headland between the world of traditional peoples and a lonely sea, with to the southwest, an eight mile stretch of sand and two miles due north, a small Arab town with streets wide enough for one fully laden donkey to pass. Swahili women, dressed in black buibuis, sometimes can be heard singing behind shuttered windows.

Location

Located 20 minutes from Manda airport by dhow and 20 minutes to Lamu town, serviced daily by the hotel dhow departing at 9am and returning at 12pm, complimentary to Peponi guests.

Climate

The south-east trade winds blow from May to September a strong, gusty wind which brings the rains, rough water. During this time most boat movements take place along inshore channels. The north-east trade winds blow from October to April bringing calm, clear water and the fishing season. Occasionally there are strong winds, but storms are rare.
